Terms of Service
Draft. Have a lawyer review this before launch. Last updated: (date)
These terms are an agreement between you and Talewrite ("we", "us"). By creating an account you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use the service.
1. The service
Talewrite provides online tables for play-by-post tabletop roleplaying games. A game is run either by an AI game master or by a human Dungeon Master (a "DM"). We also provide a Lobby, a homebrew library and related tools. AI output is generated automatically. It can be inaccurate, strange or unsuitable, and you use it at your own discretion. Features may change over time.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old, or older if the law where you live requires it. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms.
- Give accurate information, keep your password private, and don't share or sell your account. You're responsible for activity on your account.
- One person, one account. Don't create accounts to get around a suspension or ban.
3. Purchases
- Lifetime access is a one-time purchase. It unlocks the features described on the pricing page for as long as Talewrite operates, and it includes a one-time starter amount of AI credit. "Lifetime" means the lifetime of the service, not of the purchaser. It can't be transferred to another account.
- AI credit packs are prepaid credit for AI usage at the tables you host. Credit doesn't expire while your account is open. It has no cash value, and it can't be refunded or transferred except where the law requires.
- Subscriptions renew automatically each month until you cancel. Each includes a monthly AI allowance that resets every month and doesn't roll over.
- Prices may change. A price change never affects something you've already paid for, and a subscription price change applies from your next billing period after we notify you.
- When AI credit and allowance run out, the AI game master pauses until more is added. A daily site-wide limit may also pause AI features temporarily.
- All payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.
4. Cancelling and refunds
- You can cancel a subscription at any time from your Account page. You keep its benefits until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. You keep your lifetime access and any unused credit.
- You can delete your account at any time from your Account page. Deleting cancels any subscription immediately and permanently removes your account and the content it owns (see section 9).
- One-time purchases (lifetime access and credit packs) are non-refundable once used. If something went wrong, such as a duplicate charge or a purchase you didn't make, contact us within 14 days and we'll make it right. Nothing here limits any refund rights you have under the law where you live.
5. Paid games run by DMs
- A DM can charge players for seats at tables they run. The DM is the seller. Payments go to the DM's own Stripe account, under Stripe's terms. We are not a party to the agreement between the DM and the player.
- We keep a platform fee from each seat payment, shown before a DM turns on paid seats.
- DMs must describe their game honestly (what's included, how often they post, how long it runs) and deliver it. Refunds for paid games are handled by the DM. Players can report a DM who doesn't deliver. Repeated or serious problems can lead to removal of paid-game privileges or the account.
- DMs are responsible for any taxes on their earnings.
- Monthly seat payments can be cancelled by the player at any time. When a monthly seat ends, the player leaves the table.
6. Your content
You keep ownership of what you create: characters, posts, campaign notes and homebrew. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host, store, display and process it as needed to run the service, including sending table content to our AI providers to generate responses. Public homebrew you publish can be used by other players at their tables while it's public. Copies already added to a table may stay there after you unpublish it.
7. Homebrew and copyrighted material
- Only publish public homebrew that you created yourself, in your own words. Don't paste text, tables or artwork you don't have the rights to.
- "From a book I own" entries are private and only for games you play in. You confirm that you own the book, and you should summarize rather than copy.
- To report infringing material, use the Report button or contact us at the address below with the details required by law. We remove infringing material and may close the accounts of repeat infringers.
8. Code of conduct
Be kind, and remember there's a person behind every character. You agree not to:
- harass, threaten, bully or stalk anyone, or post hate speech or slurs;
- post sexual content involving minors, or sexual content in public spaces such as the Lobby;
- ignore the safety tools a table sets (lines and veils);
- spam, scam, impersonate others, or run fake or misleading paid games;
- share other people's personal information;
- try to break, overload, scrape or get around limits of the service, including the AI allowance;
- use the service for anything illegal.
9. Moderation, suspension and termination
- Anyone can report a player, message, listing or homebrew. Moderators review reports and may remove content, warn, suspend or ban accounts. When we suspend or ban an account, we tell the person why where we can.
- We may suspend or terminate an account that breaks these terms or puts other people or the service at risk. If we terminate an account for breaking these terms, purchases aren't refunded. If we close an account for any other reason, we'll refund unused prepaid credit.
- If you think a moderation decision was wrong, contact us and we'll take another look.
- If Talewrite ever shuts down, we'll give at least 30 days' notice, let you export your table data, and refund unused credit packs bought in the previous 6 months.
10. Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all implied warranties. We aren't responsible for content posted by players or DMs, for paid games between DMs and players, or for AI output. To the extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For material changes, we'll notify you by email or on the site at least 14 days before they take effect. If you keep using the service after that, you accept the new terms. If you don't agree, you can cancel and delete your account.
